Rumba Caliente ("hot Rumba") is the piano solo component of my winning entry for the 2006 SAMRO Overseas Bursary Competition. The piece has been enthusiastically received outside the competition too. Acclaimed international concert pianist Mariel Ilusorio has included it in her repertoire for concerts both local and on tour. UNISA also accepted it as a valid piece for the list D section of the Grade 8 piano solo exam syllabus, after the succesful application for this by Grahamstown musician Daniel Hutchinson.
The piece is quite accessible, moving from a slow lyrical opening to a rewarding development of the famous Latin-american rhythmic style known as montuno. It pays much tribute to the solo styles of Eddie Palmieri and Chucho Valdes, and so is full of fire and explosions!
